It's old, with calcite obscuring some of the cross, but the base seems more modern to me. Some other free form stuff in the area. Very sharp limestone, do not fall here or get the sewing gear out.
I was persuaded to crawl in a javelina den, no occupants but their scat, along with cactus spines and pack rat stuff. Hope I don't get the Hantavirus. Of course on my stomach in the dirt in this cave in the most narrow spot, and my headlamp showing a bigger room about 10 feet away, I hear a rustling in the passage. Fortunately just a bat. Have to come back with gear and serious dust masks.
Sun--- the destination is known but how to get there??? Drive, park at the cow palace corral, hike down in a canyon with running water and some fall colors yet, boulder hopping with some cattle trail intermixed. On and on it seemed. Finally, the early 1900's homestead, the house still standing, an old well, 2-3 more foundations, and nearby mining evidence. Very tranquil place. I could see myself sitting on the porch. We explored the mining evidence, no entry but an old tunnel with water pouring out of it, grated and now used as a spring source. Rock hopping back, surprised I didn't fall once.
Great weekend, as usual. |
