Tonight was finally our night! We started from the neighborhood immediately adjacent to Pima Canyon trailhead just before 6pm and made our way up the trail. We decided to head up Mormon Loop, then over to National and Hidden Valley. We got to the turn-off for the western end of Hidden Valley just as it was really getting dark, but the moon wasn't up yet. I probably had us start about 20 minutes too early to get the timing with moonrise just right, so we hung around at the entrance to Hidden Valley for about 15 minutes before continuing. It was very pleasant to experience the trail with no crowds. Once we were back on National, we started to run into some critters--lots of scorpions, a gecko, mice, and one small (about 15 inches) rattlesnake. Doing this hike at night was a lot of fun for me, and I may try to make it happen more often. |
