On Tuesday, March 10, we headed out to the visit Haunted Forest Cave. From San Ignacio it is a 2-3 hour drive depending on traffic and road conditions.

Not long after we started out the Land Rover stalled going up a hill and wouldn't start again. Luckily, we were behind in the Jeep and saw they needed help. I was surprised to see that someone had pulled over to help already. Coincidently, it was Marcos, a Belizean guide who liked to go exploring with the XMET team and was supposed to meet us at his house. We loaded all the gear into the Jeep and then Marcos towed the Land Rover to a side street and we were on our way again. We left the Hummingbird Highway and started on a dirt road through farms and jungle. The route to the cave was basically a 4x4 road through a few fields and a bit of jungle to a river. We crossed the river and hiked up a hill to the cave entrance which was a huge opening with the river flowing out of it.

Haunted Forest Cave is one that is typically not visited by tourists. Few people know of its existence outside of the locals and the XMET team who have been mapping it. This makes this cave extra special!

We scrambled down into the cave and from there it was a pleasant walk through the cave along the flowing water to where we wee going to work. My task was to create a detailed sketch of the area in the cave known as the Haunted Forest. David and Joel were my helpers. The other team took off to go search for a skeleton that had been found by the locals.

The full Haunted Forest 'room' is about 190 feet by 150 ft, the largest I've ever attempted the sketch. The size of the room really wasn't the biggest issue, it was the fact that it is jam packed with formations! It was unlike anything I've ever seen before! We laid stations, took data, and soon I sat down to plot out the stations on the graph paper and start my sketch. It took about 30 minutes before I started to get in the rhythm of my sketching. I was starting to go pretty quickly when David announced it was time to pack up and go. I looked at I had barely completed 1/3 of the room. Failure! No!! Luckily, we still had one day of caving left and we talked David into letting us go back to finish the sketch and to check out what the other team found...a pile of bones (not the skeleton they were searching for!)!
