We visited Tunnel first. Even though I had seen cross section drawings of this slot in the Kelsey book I was still amazed to see it with my own eyes. The tunnel had water in it. The first few feet were hard to avoid the water. I went in until I was about thigh deep and then I decided to do a bit of stemming. The water was cold since it doesn't really see any sun. The ceiling has about 4 inch gap which doesn't allow any light in. All the light is from the entrances on either side. The Tunnel itself isn't that long. But it is spectacular!!!
From there we retraced our steps to Zebra. Unfortunately, the tourists were now out and so we had to share our Zebra experience with them. I feel like I didn't get to take the photos I would have otherwise. But even so it was great! We went as far as we could to a climb. Josh went up the climb and scoped it out for us. It didn't seem worth struggling up the climb so we went ahead and turned around. The sandstone stripes in this canyon and unlike the ones in the others. We also saw many of the Iron oxide concretions AKA Moqui marbles. Well worth the hike!
We made quick work of the hike out and then drove the 10 hours home...
Overall visiting Escalante National Monument meant a Happy Birthday for Joel! |
