I talked to Kyle about doing a moderate hike in the Mazzies. I had an afternoon commitment and we thought we could easily complete the South Fork – Gold Ridge Loop in the time allotted. We met up on Saturday morning and drove up to the Deer Creek Trailhead. Neither of us have hiked from this TH before so that was bonus.

We started hiking and connected onto the South Fork Trail. The first few miles are relatively easy going and we made solid time. The trail eventually drops down into a creek bed and you do some mild canyoneering. The biggest issue for me was the patches of poison ivy along the way. I went to great lengths to avoid the plant. I tried to stay out of the creek bed as much as possible. We continued on and our pace slowed to a crawl around the 4.5 mile mark. The creek becomes heavily overgrown and more poison ivy greeted us. Kyle checked his GPS and said the route was on our left (south side) up an embankment. We decided to backtrack and luckily found the route heading up. It was heavily overgrown and the cairn was completely buried under foliage.

We climbed up the route and it became more obvious but only lasted for about ten minutes. The route pretty much becomes random game trails going in multiple directions. We did our best to decipher the best route and our going was really slow. While checking our GPS we determined that we needed to cross back to the north side of the creek. This was easier said than done because we needed to scramble down about two hundred feet and then find another way up on the other side. My time was running out and we decided to bail. The return flew by and I made it home in time.

We’re going to give the loop another crack later in the year when we have more time. South Fork has some real beauty to it and is definitely worth checking out. Lots of water flowing in the creek as well.
