| no partners | | An alcove cave, and a mine---- needed some fill in stuff to do since I wasn't backpacking. Map had a stalagmite cave marked on it, so we went there. The road was washed out in one place, but with the lift and big tires we crossed carefully. Ended up missing the turn off and up a worsening road, then retreated and drove to the car park. Hard to miss the huge opening. Up the eroded trail, felt the cool air coming out. Quite the formations in this alcove, we did not find any leads but cool air coming up from the silty floor so something is going somewhere. The stalagmites were impressive, and the former phreatic tube cave dripping with some small stalactites, new formations growing. Well visited but minimal graffiti and we saw no one while we were there and no recent vehicle tracks with the crappy road conditions.
Off to another area we saw some mine adits marked on the map. We explored around, apparently a just huge underground mine, gated off, however one area was missed and in we went. We walked for miles, literally. Probably a uranium mine, uninteresting ore, did see some coal deposits and some post mine formation. We did not get into other parts of the mine. The usual debris, only one area with some really bad air, we were out of there quickly. I liked it because there was no vertical to speak of. |
