I lost it several times but did much better on the return. This trail leaves Mud spring heading toward China Peak, then drops down via some ridiculously long switchbacks into Sycamore Canyon. Part of the Tortilla trail is opposite so you could wave if someone was on that trail. Sycamore Canyon had some spotty burn, and a lot of silt and muddy pools. The trail was as I remember, you plow through vegetation that was almost as tall as me, and you can't see where you are putting your feet for a lot of it. It's like a true old style Galiuro trail, you blink and you're off the trail. Eventually you get to Rattlesnake canyon, a short distance from where the old road from Power Hill comes in.
I got hot with the unrelenting humidity, so camped just as it started raining. Stopped, and I put the finishing touches on camp, more rain over night. On the return I took an off trail high route out of the canyon for a bit. If I was building a trail I would have put it up there. I spent some time at an area of great geodes, did some cairn modification, and found an old sign. It started thundering and raining and I covered the cameras and just hiked enjoying the rain. This trail seems traveled mainly by hunters and ranchers. It has some great views, as where it dives off a narrow mesa you are much higher than the Tortilla trail. Glad to be back in my mountains. |
