This trail begins to climb shortly after leaving the TH. Immediately I could tell the difference between hiking at lower elevations and hiking above 8000 ft. My heart was beating much quicker as I made my way up trail, but no matter, the scenery was so spectacular it was easy to ignore the extra effort required to breathe.
As you climb the views are limited due to tree density, but every so often you can look back and see the peaks north of Toulumne Meadows. You'll also pass a series of small meadows as the trail begins to level out near the top. Once at the top, the trail begins a short descent before finally leaving the trees and you enter the Lower Cathedral Lake area.
The area has a large meadow with great views of Cathedral Peak to the east, and more Yosemite backcountry to the west, along with Lower Cathedral Lake.
Along the way I met a PCT thru hiker who was on his way to Yosemite Valley to meet up with a few people. We spoke briefly and he said just a few days before he had summited Mt Whitney. I met up with him again near the lake.
This was an absolutely gorgeous hike and it was relatively easy. Great hike to see how your body will take a little bit of elevation. |
