| no partners | | Hiked into Horton and stayed the night, continued on the Highline Trail the next morning to Tonto Creek Trailhead, then I looped back to the truck via NF-289. This was my first solo backpacking trip, so I wanted to keep it relatively simple and easy. There was only one other group camping at Horton, and I didn't see a single soul along the Highline.
The Highline from Horton to the Hatchery is very easy, pretty much completely downhill with a few bumps here and there.
Saw a coyote at Dick Williams Creek. I was getting ready to filter some water, turned around and he was standing there, checking me out. I hollered at him and he promptly left the area.
At Tonto Creek I took a break and saw (I think) a Sonoran Mountain Kingsnake. Didn't get a chance to get a picture before he slithered off into some tall grasses, and I didn't want to try to handle him because I didn't know what kind of snake it was at the time.
The road walk wasn't fun. If I wasn't trying to put in new miles on the Highline I probably would have done the Derrick - Horton loop instead. |
