TH access is 4 miles up FSR 51 from HWY 89 South of South Lake Tahoe (a little rough but manageable in a car). Large TH parking area just beyond 2nd bridge over Willow Creek.
Cross wooden bridge and hike 1 mile up to intersection with the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) & head East on TRT 3 miles to Freel Peak cutoff. Then 1 mile up to Freel Peak.
Got a nice early start - nice and cool (37 deg F) from my car camp just up the road from the TH.
There were two TRT backpackers camped at the TRT intersection. Passed one of them heading down from Freel.
Nice slow but steady hike up to the Freel Peak cutoff. Beautiful day with the views getting better with each step.
I was first up Freel this morning (as far as I could tell) but HAZer Beiley and friend were not far behind. They were TRT Section hiking and had camped at Star Lake the night before.
Could see hordes ascending from below just as I started the descent. Must have passed 50 people heading up on the way down.
Good start to the week. |
