| no partners | | Participated in annual butterfly count at the preserve. Prerequisite is attending a class by dr. Ron Rutowski at Mustang library about the science behind the counts, how to ID local butterflies and team info. Our team was lead by Laura Miller who has extensive knowledge and is also a member of central az butterfly association (CAzBA). We met at Brown's and driven to old paint wash road as there is no TH in that location. Hiked a mile upto OP7 and came back the same way which is in a wash. Our team counted 34 butterflies belonged to 6 species. We made sure we did not count the same butterflies on our way back. Soapbushes as well as Thurber's honeysuckle along the way but we did not see butterflies that use those plants as hosts.
We went to Rare Earth for lunch...very yummy salads. Nice company of other stewards.
BTW, we saw tons of very large dragonflies....way more than we saw butterflies. They were ID by Marceline.
Apparently counts are low this year due to lack of rain.
Brian organized the event. Thanq Brian. |
