| no partners | | Today I wanted to continue my search for the northern terminus of the Black Canyon Trail (BCT) that I started last Sunday (see triplog). I was hoping to be able to drive to where I left off, but the road through the X Lazy B ranch was gated and locked. I parked my truck and left a note stating that I was mapping the BCT and that it crossed the road about 1.75 miles farther.
Last night I used Google Earth to follow the trail as much as I was able to and enter some breadcrumbs onto my GPSr to help me along today. Though the trail was faint a lot of the way, I was mostly able to follow it. I did lose it for a time on the way out but after half a mile was able to pick it up with one of the bread crumbs. I was able to follow the trail on the way back.
On Google Earth, I was able to follow the trail until it intersected with a road near a Corral by Russian Well. I was hoping there would be a BCT sign once I reached that point, but there wasn't. There was a BCT sign where the trail met the road, but there was no BCT sign on the other side of the road, nor along it. I did travel one branch of the road for a long distance but never spotted anymore BCT signs. Perhaps that's as far as the BCT has been constructed so far. I've been trying to contact the BCT Coalition to find out more about the northern portion of the BCT but have had no luck so far.
It was cool out today and it rained off and on throughout the hike, especially near the end as I travelled from the BCT on the road through the X Lazy B ranch. |
