Ok, so just getting around to writing up my triplog for the Reverse Flat Iron route. Following Rick Vincents route.
Starting over at the Mining Camp at 0656, We worked our way up the Treasure Loop past the Hand. After a bit we hoppped off trail and headed straight into a drainage. Some ice covering the pools of water in the falls area here. A hawk perched on a spire giving us special attention. We caught the ridge up that was just above the falls. Following this ridge straight towards the hoodoos high above us on the mountains ridgeline.
Only a few moments of reprieve from this point to the ridgeline. Steep. The morning dew still icey on the grassy areas of the slopes. Scree. Cholla. Steeper still. More cholla. An agave found my left thigh and found momentary shelter inside my leg... Buckhorn hiding in the long grass also found refuge from the slopes inside my calf. Just about to the top. The hoodoos are getting closer. They're so close. My thighs are burning. My calves are rebelling. I just wanna top out, hit 5024 and have my damn coconut water at this point. Finally, we're rounding up on some smooth rock and then the Ridgeline is right there.
One last push up to 5024. And wow. What a great hike. Chill on 5024 for about a half hour and eat while we rehydrate. Down Siphon Draw and out. Wow. Busy trail on New Years eve day. Glad we took the back way up |
