Interesting Exploratory day... we headed out in a couple of vehicles in case some wanted an earlier turn around (for whatever reason!) Ross, Will, Luster, Clinton and Mary... easy walk over to what appeared to be the last of the larger cuts of the 10-12 canyons along the west end of Joplin Ridge. It allowed for easy and only occasional full body scrambling. Great Vistas... and nice rock layers surrounding. We even encountered a mated pair of Owls... might give the canyon a name?

The easy eventually was cut off: towering Dryfall and adjacent cliffs. There were numerous up scrambles... but not all felt comfortable, so the group split. Will and Ross took the Spot Device...Rope...and a radio! They headed up to an obvious cleft.

The rest of the hikers enjoyed a slow descent; canyon may have been even nicer going down.

At the mouth of the canyon we did an easy traverse to the south and made our way into W9... for a very pleasant surprise. The bedrock route gave slightly more challenging scrambles, but nothing hard. Rock layers were entertaining. We ascended to an obvious blockage. Rested, then descended... we'll come back to top this one out on another day.

Radio check found the other hikers blocked from fully ascended Joplin Ridge. The crested a side ridge lower and made their way over into Dog Canyon... Ross descended on an angle that let him cross the canyon above the Narrows rather than risk dropping into unknown areas. Good move. Their earlier climbing had gotten dicey... confirmed the good decision for the non-climbers to turn around where they did.

End of day radio check caught them coming down the Dog Canyon trail... timed just right for us to drive over and pick them up, saving them the miles back to their truck! I'd sent a camera off with them... alas, no shots of the hard areas; they were a bit busy. Some nice vista shots from new perspectives in Dog Canyon.

Good day out... everyone back safe.
