| no partners | | I did a little walk around the mountain today. Twas okay. I did see my first snake of the year - a long black coachwhip, but it was too quick for a pic. Lots of birds were out, but I noticed that the birds congregate in certain areas, particularly at the Wind Cave TH and a mile north for it and at the middle on the east side of the mountain. Some birds were near Cat Mountain too.
I also saw my first official costa hummingbird. Apparently, I saw one with a birding group, according to the birders, but it was a blur that zoomed by us. I have no idea how they could have identified it so quickly. Anyway, what this hummingbird was doing was expanding his head feathers in an "X" and flapping in the tree. I thought it was caught on something or was a caught by a predator, but it appeared to be trying to impress a female hummingbird with a courtship display. I took the best photos that I could get. It then saw me and started swooping down on my head with a high-pitched, "wwwhhhooooeeeeeoooo" (something like that). Later, I kept hearing the same call, so there are plenty of costa hummingbirds at Usery Mtn Regional Park.
15 new fauna species seen this year. Not bad for 1.5 months. |
