| no partners | | Lots of driving, some hiking, some mine exploration. Visited several old cabins associated with mines in corners of Death Valley not often visited. Started out in the Ibex area, my favorite, to an old mine area. Lots of flowers on the dunes, carpets of purple, white and some yellow. I saw two other hikers on the dunes, positively crowded! Only other vehicles two government plated; appeared to be a biologist/botanist types doing some floral survey.
Out to the Owlsheads, my first to that area, pretty desolate and neat. Visit Sagenite canyon area ( canyon is not labeled on topo used to be a major rock hounding area, of course collecting is prohibited as now is park), very pretty. We drove to the end of the road, saw burros, a desert tortoise, mines of course, big views of dry lake beds, lots of flowers including some pretty good poppy spreads. Great camping with incredible star views. Did not see anyone else out there.
Drive north through the throngs, a few pics of the amazing flower spread right off the road. Best was near the Armagosa river area and below Bad Water to the Ash Mill site. Drive into Saline Valley via the South Pass, long hike to historic Blue Jay mine area. Great weather for that. These areas are below the Copper Queen sites on Uhebe Peak off the Race Track playa.
Had other things but had to alter plans. Drive out and some exploration off Lee Flat which is off the Saline Valley road. Some neat cabins and old mining areas. Lovely high desert with lots of Joshua Trees.
Weather turning, wind and light rain. Back out to Ibex, camp, some evening and morning storm photos. Drive home, have some photos of Aliens at Baker, Ca I'll try to put in there somewhere. |
