Sat headed down the road toward Hess Canyon, passing a whole group of young men getting ready to walk the road for a backpacking adventure. I think us driving on spurred a back of a pick up ride for some of them rather than the whole thing. I got the FJ down a rough part then parked. Our destination was one canyon over, that contained White Ledges Spring. The White Ledges are quite broken down here, with huge scree slopes. You drop then go over a saddle. Niceties were flowers and a jungle like atmosphere for a bit, and an old followable trail. Quite a few seeps in the canyon but no significant spring flow. Corral, old trough concreted in 1934, a boring open section, then a section in a little trench but with wonderful big saquaros on the hillsides. At the salt a new portion of the fence for the Salt River Wilderness. The river was running strong and clear. Back up to the car to drive to a view car camp.

Day 2-- we drove the main road then took a small road off to a corral then a quad route I was able to get the FJ down to a good parking area. We hiked down a sandy drainage with rocky hoodoos all around to get into Upper Hess. Big cottonwoods, some surface water, and a small area where it went through a rocky narrows ( about 2 feet), and continued on with bigger rock walls. We turned around where it started opening up. This was about a 6 miler RT and I did it in sandals with no pack, just camera. Why I don't know. Brian brought extra water and I did drink about a cup and a half. Working on my desert tolerance. Everytime I say, oh, I will just go a short way I don't need a pack, I really do know better.
