| partners | | Three of the past four years that Oregon Hiker and I have been doing our mid-March week Vehicle Camping/Hike Explorations off Cherry Creek Road-FR203, I have been bugging him about including the lesser know and explored North Fork of Devils Chasm as one of our planned off-trail day hikes. Finally this trip we had it on our day hike itinerary. It also made better sense this trip to include it as we were camping a much closer distance mileage wise to the TH Start. With a couple of scenic stops, it still took us an hour drive to reach the TH Start due to the slow 4WD-ing time.
We started our hike initially up the main Devils Chasm South Fork Canyon Trail then at a WP location viewed on my posted GPS Route, we left the main trail and crossed over the canyon drainage to parallel up the drainage on the creek side that would branch-off to the West into the North Fork Devils Chasm section. When we reached this split area of the Main Canyon South Fork / North Fork [ photo ] , I looked at Larry and Larry was soon looking at a second option approach (Plan B), a lesser known Ranching Route right next to us that climbed up the embankment and out of the canyon drainage.
After viewing the above photo scene which was the off-trail start of the North Fork section, holy .. We thought that this defined ranching route up and out might just be the ticket around the congested bushwhack that would lie straight ahead. We opted for this Plan B and as we continued to commit to its scenic and interesting route leading us north and later NW into a whole new world of interesting stuff we had not viewed before. After some time we were committed to this Plan B route and later realized that it was not going to bring us back around to enter the North Fork of Devils Chasm.
Our Plan B route proved to be a winner with an ending summit of Topo Maps Peak 4333 and even though I still can't say that I explored into the North Fork of Devils Chasm after many years of anticipation in doing so, I can say that I still had another very rewarding hike day in our Sierra Ancha Wilderness that never disappoints |
