| no partners | | This is an incredible spot that's as beautiful as any place in California, and is classic Big Sur. Anyplace with high peaks dramatically rising from the sea with redwood forests in deep canyons between scenic ridges is never a bad place to visit. The only drawback during my first visit here were the crowds. There were a lot of people, but everyone was pretty cool. There was a group of 20 people who appeared to be college students (some of them had beer), but they were hiking at a really fast pace and they were polite. I'm not a fan of groups larger than 10, but one cannot reasonably expect to find solitude here on a weekend when the weather is gorgeous.
I had to park a 1/4 mile north of the park entrance along Hwy. 1, and checked out McWay Falls before hitting the Canyon Falls Trail. McWay Falls weren't in good photographic position with the midday sun behind it so I decided to get my shots at the end, and I'm glad I did. The Ewoldson Trail lasso-loop was next to the short Lookout Trail which led to a great viewpoint. The Waters Trail had great views of the coast to the historic Tin House, and then I took the Tan Bark Trail to an unofficial trail that went up a ridge. Unfortunately that ridge was covered in poison oak and dense brush, and I only went about 1/4 mile up before tiring of basically bushwhacking. It's a damned good thing I wore pants that I coated in bug juice.
I made my way back to the trail head as the sun moved to the west to create great vistas. The McWay Falls viewpoint was crowded, but I finally got to see that iconic spot. |
