Clouds and rain were threatening all day. Quite a bit of snow above 9200' on RTP. There was a whole lot of snow on Crystal Trail as well. Main plan was to get some excercise and get some views of Devil's playground and the area below. There used to be Pikes Peak Ski area 1939-1984. My buddy and I are planning to go try to get some turns Manana. Devil's Playground is a little late for turns, but we'll see. If it pans I'm still planning on A basin this week.
Took RTP to Catamount Flume to Catamount Creek, but after Garden of Eden it got interesting as I decided to follow the trail with all the warning signs. And after taking 49 min to do 1 mile maintaining 5 points of contact (all my limbs plus my pumpkin) I have to say they may be legitimate signs. :) basically this trail follows the entire catamount falls and it is extremely steep. I would not do this trail with any moisture. There are trees and rocks to grab onto, but I would call it down climbing rather than hiking. Add to this a fall would inevitably cause damage bouncing off the rocks down to the creek and end up with you either dead from the fall, pinned under a boulder and drowned or cascading over more rocks. After that excitement I made my way to Crystal Trail which looked dry from GMF had a large amount of snow on it. Heading up to Mt. Esther I ran into so many orange trees and trees with orange flags that I lost the trail I was on and had to Bushwacking back to RTP. I get it the forest service is doing something or making it seem like they are doing something, but the flagging has gotten so bad that it is detracting from the enjoyment of the wilderness. There seems to be no rhyme or reason what they are marking. Some are dead trees some are alive, some flagging doesn't have any other flags for a mile and today in this case I actually lost my way due to sensory overload. WTF? Anyway when I got to where I could see the remains of the runs from the Ski area it appeared there was decent coverage for the brief minute before Pikes Peak disappeared and I started to get hailed on. All in all I still enjoy being able to walk out the door to explore this area.
