After a sleepless night due to gale-force winds we wasted little time pulling up stakes and packing up as quickly as possible. Still not sure just where we would be going, where we would stay or how long, we just knew another 3-4 days of this incessant wind would not be fun at all. So we figured we'd just hit the road and see what opportunity arises.

First up was driving out of The Maze and up the Flint Trail. Yup, the Flint Trail was scary enough neither of us cared to stop even a moment for photos, and we sure didn't want to meet another vehicle along the way.

Once at the top, since we were just a few miles from Lands End I couldn't resist taking a quite side-trip to bag at least one peak this trip. While Lands End was a quick-and-easy climb, the summit was something else.

Although a flat 50-foot wide summit, due to the winds coming up and over the Orange Cliffs it was not even possible to kneel let alone stand for the usual photos and video. The only way I could come close to holding the camera still was to lay on my stomach while taking photos so I wasted little time getting it done.

Ok, what's next? We stopped at the Hans Flats Ranger Station to let them know we would not use the the last three days of our permit. We decided to check out the BLM campsites at Horseshoe Canyon and hike into the canyon tomorrow. that idea lasted only until we got there and found winds every bit as strong as in The Maze.

Hmmm, what's the backup plan now? Well, I had loaded maps of the Cedar Mesa/Grand Gulch area as well so let's give that a shot. Being late in the day who knows whee we'd camp so let's see if we can get a room in Hanksville. No rooms available so we settled for a great cheeseburger & fries meal at Blondie's Eatery. And drove until sundown before finding a small BLM campsite along UT 95. After a long day and lots of miles it was good to finally settle down at a beautiful campsite.
