In Hessel, we rented a tandem sea kayak with enough storage space for our overnight gear. We paddled through several narrow channels out to the open water of Lake Huron, along the shore line of several small islands, and made camp at Government Island. Sunset this time of year was around 10:15 p.m., so we went out on the water again that evening for a twilight paddle.
The next day, we planned to paddle all the way back to Hessel. By 9 a.m., the skies had darkened and distant sounds of thunder were moving nearer. Thirty minutes later, down-strikes in the distance, thunder right on top of us. The heavens opened and the downpour began. The storm was right on top of us, and lightning is not a comfortable sight to a kayaker.
We kept to the shoreline, paddled faster, and called the trip early by landing at the nearby village of Cedarville, where we were able to get some cell reception and call for a shuttle back to the rental shop.
It was a very fun experience to kayak on the Upper Peninsula. The scenery was the perfect solution to my desert summer blues. |
