While vacationing in Minnesota, Pat and I made a morning trip to Minnehaha Park in the Southern suburbs of Minneapolis. It was a beautiful morning with lots of bright sunshine, a light breeze and tolerable humidity. Fortunately we started early and beat the crowds as this place can get tons of visitors on just this kind of day.
One of Minneapolis' oldest and most popular parks features a majestic 53-foot waterfall, limestone bluffs, and river overlooks, attracting more than 850,000 visitors annually, coupled with above normal amounts of rain this year, I was hoping for a good flow in the creek and wasn't disappointed. I Descended the flights of steps down the limestone bluffs to the creek's edge where the views of the falls are at their best. At this hour, the sun was shining through the trees onto the falls and a slight rainbow could be seen in the rising mist. Old trails that went right up to the base of the falls have been blocked off with signage to prevent accidents... Darn, I wanted to get up close.
Well maintained trails lead downstream alongside the creek to scenic stone bridges that allow you to cross over or just pause and watch Minnehaha Creek flowing below you. The ground was wet and muddy from hundreds of springs popping out of the bluffs but, surprisingly, there were NO Mosquitoe's, only a few Gnats to swat. Following my hike, I met up with Pat and we had a wonderful fish basket lunch at the "See Salt" restaurant on the Park's grounds. My pre-paid parking permit was almost timed out, so we headed out as the tour buses were arriving. |
