Just checking out the rains of the past week :D

It's supposed to be a nice hiking-weather weekend so I got an early start and headed for the First Water Horse Lot Trailhead to head down into the First Water Basin to see what the rains had left behind. There was already a few cars in the lot when I arrived so I talked with one of the guys to find out what's going on. I was told that the Boy Scouts and the Jr ROTC were going to be out for an Orienteering course, "but they won't be a bother to hikers" :o ya-sure.

I was on the trail heading down the narrow canyon route before sunrise and the weather felt cool under the clear, cloudless sky. An unnamed wash feeds into the First Water Creek at the next bend and I followed it up. Lots of water filled the pools but no water was flowing between them, sure looks refreshing to see the standing water though :app:

Once the sun began to light up the tops of Little Four Peaks, I began hearing voices, they were loud and they were everywhere.... so much for a quiet hike. I wandered around the pools until the sun was lighting up the valley and began heading upstream, away from all the voices. Awesome weather, finally, for a short walk in the desert.

I ended up at the First Water Trailhead to find four Forest Service Volunteers manning the parking lot, they must be expecting a busy day. Walking down the road to the Horse Lot, I could hear those voices again but when I entered the parking lot I was surprised to see a dozen large school busses and several more smaller busses filling the lot. Teen's were everywhere, hundreds of em, checking out their cell phones, throwing footballs, and just mingling around.... and it was only 0900, and more busses were arriving.

Good timing Jack, finished my hike just in the nick of time :y:

Not much happening for Autumn Color down in the basin.

Although the creek's dry, there's water to be found in pools along the creek.
