Gorgeous day for hiking over 10,000 feet!
I love being able to leave my house after noon, drive up the mountain, and be able to hike to a high peak - then easily be home well before dark.
Don't know what took me so long to do this, but it was fabulous. The trail up from Shannon was lined with ferns, aspens, pines, and raspberries. Once on top I enjoyed the picnic table by the cabin with snacks and a summit beer. The temperature was 70 degrees ... almost 30 lower than in the valley below.
Took the road back down.
Encountered a little twin-spotted rattlesnake just below the top.
Afterwards I went to check out Snow Flat - really cool little camping area with a small pond and some turkeys milling around. Also found another snake near the pond - had its head down a hole, and seemed dead until I started to pick it up.
Finally, on the drive back, saw Chad,Addie, And Lauren up to something along the side of the road.
Home in time for evening dog walk and amazing moon rise.
