This was a short hike to explore the south side of Burro Mountain above where I was camped on FR402D. I had found this campsite after exploring many miles of forest road and old unmarked logging roads in my FJ that morning cataloguing possible car camping sites for future use. It was in a beautiful setting of thick forest with spruce, pine and Douglas Fir trees and fern covered meadows. A spring flowed out of a pipe in the hillside into a water trough made out of a log. I hiked a short distance further up FR402D from the campsite and then took off up hill following an elk trail through a meadow covered with thigh high ferns. After proceeding up hill for some distance I encountered a 4x4 track which turned out to be a continuation of FR402D beyond the point where the map showed it ending. I followed this road as it passed over the top of Peak 9850, the highest point on Burrow Mtn, and continued down the north side. A couple of turkeys hopped out of the heavy cover along the road and trotted ahead of me. My brain was a little foggy from the altitude but I could have sworn the shorter of the pair was trying to imitate an eagle and the taller one was mumbling something about updating Route Scout. Must have just been my imagination, that pair never ventures this far from Phoenix for a day hike.

I was surprised to find that the 4x4 road led to the car campsite from my 7/13/2016 trip to the White Mountains. I had vacated that site after only one night because of all the ATV, motorcycle, and target practice hubbub from the many camps scattered around the periphery of the huge meadow. On this day, also a Wednesday, the meadow was quiet with no camps in sight. At that point I turned around and followed the 4x4 track back to FR402D and my current campsite.
