The Trail is in fairly good shape, maybe a little hard to follow up on top. So a gps track for the trail would help. I did some short off trail exploring along the edge of the cliffs overlooking Cherry Creek Canyon to scan the cliffs and hilltops below for Indian ruins. Searching my photos on the PC after I got home revealed three ruins but nothing new/unknown. Damage from the Juniper Fire along the trail was pretty light. There were areas where it burned along the ground but didn't get into the tree tops. The heaviest fire damage is along the base of the cliffs on the west side of Cherry Creek but it did a good job of clearing out a lot of brush that made this area difficult to access off-trail. A nice hike to end my 5 night car camping trip in the Sierra Ancha.
Got back to my camp at the Billy Lawrence TH early enough in the afternoon to have a couple hours of time to relax and read before starting dinner. A couple guys on ATVs pulled into camp to check out the views into Cherry Creek Canyon. One guy said he was from Globe and shared an interesting story he said was circulating among his acquaintances in Globe. According to him there's a conspiracy between the Forest Service and some mining company to strip mine Workman Creek Canyon for uranium. Not the first conspiracy theory I've heard coming out of Globe but this one is a real doozy. |
