I rediscovered an old triplog by Flying Fliver which explored the mesa top and even provided some petroglyph enticement [ photo ] - so I sketched out a tentative route to go have a look.
I started up a jeep road and managed to avoid the flying bullets (main recreational pursuit there is target shooting). When the road ended it turned into a slow bushwack to gain the ridge that would take me to the mesa. Much nicer walking on the ridge particularly once I started noticing some burro paths - they know the best way. When I got to the main mesa top I passed a jeep road - apparently used by the rancher to work on the stock pond. Looked to have had recent maintenance but it was dry today - there was cattle sign on this corner of the mesa but I didn't see any up there.
I walked across to the Fliv petroglyphs - really nice overlook of the Agua Fria arm of Lake Pleasant and Indian Mesa on the other side. There was nice cultural stuff in this area.
I continued north walking the edge looking for more petroglyphs but I only found one more. It was a steep descent off the mesa edge to get back down and I walked a pretty terrible decommissioned jeep road back to the car. Rocky walking and too many gnats but nice weather, so not a bad day. |
