| partners | | I got beta from J. Wisocki on Facebook for this trip. He likely claims first descent.
We needed something to do after a day of caving. This is just what the doctor ordered. The approach to the canyon was super quick! The canyon itself is not the typical sandstone slots you see in WCC. It is sandstone but it is open, brushy and dry. It does have several good drops of which the last one is 200 ft! To the side of the last rappel you can see why it's named 4 Boulders - there is a crack that has 4 huge chockstones lodged in it. After the finale, you walk a short distance and are in Clover Creek which looks very similar but with less water.
Along with the beta I had a gps tracklog. When we went to exit, I choose not to read the beta instead we looked for the spot that correlated with the GPS. HA! We climbed up a steep tree litter filled chute. We kept climbing using hands until we decided it is possible we could cliff out or run into a section I wouldn't want to do. Also, we plan to come back someday and it would be nice to have a non-climbing exit that others would enjoy (or at least not feel like they are going to die). So we back tracked and then looked for another route. Finally, I broke down and pulled out the description of the exit and within minutes we were heading up. The route was not easy to follow at all times but we were able to safely make our way out of the canyon without too much climbing.
After our adventure we head back to Pine and ate at Old County Inn which has great pizza. I recommend the Pancho which has roasted pork on it! Wonderful! Then we hit up Scoops in Payson for some shakes. What a great way to end a wonderful trip! |
