| no partners | | I was planning on a long day but a different kind of long day than what I got. I headed up to Flagstaff with the intention of completing the big double climb over Kendrick. Lily and I headed up from the parking lot and made really good time. The Kendrick Trail is such a perfect grade-- it climbs but I feel like I could do it all day. I hiked the last mile or so up to the saddle with a gentleman I met on the trail and had a pretty pleasant chat. We parted ways and I headed down Bull Basin. This was a new one for me. There's lots of deadfall near the top but the trail improves the further down you go.
We hit the Connector trail and this is where I started smelling smoke. Some smoke from the prescribed burn I could see from the saddle was wafting over and settling all around Kendrick. It wasn't bad yet but I kept it in mind. We made it to the Pumpkin Trail and climbed high enough to get a glimpse of the summit. It was looking pretty nasty up there. Originally, there was just supposed to be a mountain between me and my car-- now there was also a wall of smoke. I stopped to eat lunch and decided to give it a minute and see how it looked. It just got worse and I wasn't climbing another 2,200 ft sucking on smoke. It was even getting pretty nasty lower where I was so I decided to pack up and get outta there. The Pumpkin Trail drops really fast to the trail head-- faster than I was expecting so I was pleased. Then we walked endlessly down 171 well below the smoke all the way back to the trailhead. By the time we were done, it looked like the smoke had mostly moved on from the peak though things were still pretty hazy in the distance. I still managed to get a pretty good hike out of it, but I really want to finish that loop. |
