So, I'm hiking again, in moderation. I had what I think was a stress fracture, left foot, a metatarsal bone, back in August. I had bought the latest in cool trail shoes and never got to wear them. They are Altra Lone Peak 3.0 hiker mid. See photos. So, unlike all Altra's other trail shoes, these have heftier uppers, plus better tread, and they go up to the ankle. And yes, they have the zero drop, like all Altra shoes, which means no raised heel, which I like. I also like the square toes. The square toes have allowed me to hike again. I find all other shoes to be miles too wide, and yet too pointy-toed.

Oh, you wanted to know about the hike? First of all, I didn't see any bat caves. Secondly, there are two pour-offs you have to get around. I easily got around the first one by walking up a hill on the right side, but the second dry waterfall stopped me cold. I am just not up for the Class 4 scramble and possible 5.0 climbing. Call me old, I don't care. I'll be 64 in a couple months, and my back hurts, and sometimes my feet hurt, too.

Although I used a Jeep to get a little way up the wash, this is not necessary. See GPS route for how to get into the area. Take Park Moabi Road off of I-40, just west of where it crosses the Colorado River. Don't take the road toward the resort, but head toward the mountain. And look at the map.

My goal at the moment is to visit each of the local mountain ranges, and get a small taste of each one by driving into various sides of the ranges and hiking up some of the washes. I'm wintering in Needles, California, camped right on the riverbank as in previous winters. It's astonishing how many BLM Wilderness areas there are around here. Back in the day I would have wanted to bag the tallest peak in each range. Now I have a Jeep, and Altra shoes, and I'll do the best I can walking up the washes. I am also looking forward to doing a bit of Jeep camping and some very easy backpacking overnighters into some of the ranges.
