| partners | | What better way to spend Christmas then to visit a place I haven't been in 6 years. So I gathered up some folks and we drove down on Christmas Eve morning with a stop at Gila Bend to pick up sandwiches for a picnic lunch at the Mount Ajo trail head. As we continued our drive we kept hoping the rain would hold off until after the picnic but with 100% probability the odds were against us.
It spit off and on as we made the turn to drive the Ajo Mountain Scenic Loop. We pulled off at Arch Canyon but only long enough to take pictures as it was very cold; the clouds were very low. I think the last time Ambika was here when they hiked Arch Canyon, they experienced similar if not worse weather. It appeared our picnic under the ramada would not be under the ramada but hunkered down in our vehicles with views toward the TH. The clouds were still very low. Surprisingly, there were four cars with out of state plates parked at the TH. We saw one group of four come back.
It started to rain pretty heavily after our in-the-car picnic all the way to the border. The washes via the Loop Drive were just starting to run. We made the prerequisite stop at Vasquez as I needed some cointreau and beer. The parking lot was full of water, not fun. However, by the time we got toward Rocky Point the rain was just a drizzle and a blue dome had opened above the port .
The next day I got up and took the wonderful morning walk on Sandy Beach heading toward the reef. The beach is very nice and smooth here. I enjoyed seeing the wildlife and listening to the sea waves hit the beach. After a very late breakfast we headed out to Las Conchas to try and find the Sue Chase house along the beach with some of my mom's ashes in tow. We wanted to leave part of her here as it was her happy place. Well my mission to find the house was unsuccessful as the area has filled in so much since I was last at this beach back in 2005. But it was still a great walk and the beach is as awesome as ever.
I wanted to go down to Playa Encanto by the Mayan Palace but the majority of the group decided otherwise. We ended up downtown at the BooBar for a pre-Christmas dinner snack. We had a nice Christmas rib roast. The next day a few of us headed out to Playa Encanto and the Estuary and also Cholla Bay [ photoset ] .

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled. |
