Once we left the trailhead, I realized I could've driven down the road to the slot canyon, making the 3 mile approach much quicker. The shallow sandy road would be easily navigable with a mid-clearance AWD vehicle. It had even snowed the day before, and the road was in fine condition. The approach was so long that I decided to test out a cross-country route. It wasn't much faster, so we stuck to the road on the way back. I guess the only positive aspect of the approach to the slot is that you do get to see some awesome pink sand dunes!
As for the slot hike itself. It's cool. But I was left underwhelmed. I think I was expecting to be wowed after the long approach. For a lot less effort, there are many other better canyons in this area. One positive thing about Red Rock Slot: we were the only ones around. Helps to go in mid-January |
