This was a guided paddle rafting trip with Blue Heron Rafting, out of Marshall, North Carolina. The river was up due to heavy rain the day before. The run was mostly Class II with a couple of III's and one they called a IV. It was a glorious sunny day, fairly warm, in the 70's. This particular river is not super cold, which is good. Maybe about 55 or 60 degrees. Yes, I wore a wetsuit and rubber socks. The other people were a couple of families with preteen kids.
The put-in is near Marshall, NC. The take-out is at Hot Springs, NC, which is also where the Appalachian Trail crosses this river on a small highway bridge.
The guides did their job very well. Some of the holes we slammed through buried the raft and drenched us all pretty good. I even had the chance to rescue a boy who fell in. He was a chubby 13-year-old, so not a small child. His mother thanked me a bunch of times and told me I was her hero.
The guides served us up some tasty sandwiches on a riverside stop. I'm glad I went. It was the best thing I've done so far here, other than seeing my granddaughter, son and daughter-in-law. They live down on the coast, though. I'll be going back there on Friday. Stay tuned for kayaking and some other stuff, possibly. |
