Couldnt rock climb that afternoon due to heavy rains that kept me in my dorm room all afternoon doing travel research and booking future flights in the next few days traveling around Vietnam.
The next morning though still cloudy and a bit cool (around 70s) i set off to Ben Beo Harbour on the northern side of town where you can rent kayaks for the day. I paid $9 for a single person kayak and 40,000 Vietnamese Dong entrance to the National Park and off i went on my own armed with my camera, snacks, beer and Google maps.
Started kayaking just after 9AM this morning heading towards the floating villages in which people live on their entire lives living off the ocean. What an incredible sight to see! People living just like they have for generations + plus some modern conveniences such as solar panels and satellite TV.
Having paddled past the floating villages and past fishing boats i was met for the first time in the open ocean where the sky and my paddling endurance was my limit. The water was a little rough that morning but it calmed down the more i entered into the bay. I was passed by several cruises carrying seemingly "bored" looking tourists as i paddled along. This motivated me more as i felt i was doing this tour in a more organic and rewarding way (not to mention way cheaper).
Along the way i saw a small island with a nice beach and decided that would be a great spot for some Pringles and some Ha Noi Bia Beer. The feeling of having the whole place to myself was amazing, complete undillutted freedom was the theme this day. As i continued paddling along i came across more floating fishing villages and waved hello to many Vietnamese fishermen/women living their daily lives. Definitely makes one question our place on this planet.
The day kept being as relaxing and challenging the more it went on. After a few hours of paddling i started making my way back forming a loop passing through island after island along the way. I was even offered a fast way back along the back of a small motorized fishing boat but i politely declined. After 3PM i reached the floating villages once again and stopped along a small restaurant, tied my kayak and hopped on the floating home where i was offered several seafood options that i could pick right off the water. The shrimp fried rice and the giant prawns hit the spot, i splurged this day and spent the equivalent of $8 for this tasty meal including 2 more beers.
After having finished my late lunch i headed back to Ben Beo harbour to return my kayak and walk back to my hostel. I was exhausted that evening and made it an early night in bed. The next morning i took the bus back to Hanoi where i spent two more nights before flying to the town of Hue in N Central Vietnam. |
