It actually caught our attention as we were approaching our camp site. We could hear the rumble of falls and cascades below but couldn’t see from the trail. So after setting up camp we dropped into South Fork and headed down stream.
It’s a short section no more than ¾ mile but the boulders and water falls make it worth the effort. We had to get wet several times working down canyon but water was not too cold and we were more interested in the scenery anyway. Eventually the canyon flattens out again and the boulders subside. At this point we hiked up to the trail above for the exit.
We stayed on the trail for a bit but Chumley had one more area for us to check out. We crossed the divide between South Fork Kern River and Golden Trout Creek to check that out. It’s not much of a divide so didn’t take long to reach Golden Trout Creek. The creek has lazy meander through the plain in contrast to South Fork that we had just hiked. We stayed on Golden Trout Creek for a while but eventually the brush became thick enough that we exited and headed back to camp. |
