Over Memorial Day I did a recon of the upper West Fork Oak Creek doing the first 3 miles of the canyon. Since my gear was not waterproof had to stop at the first legit swimmer. So decided to come back with the proper gear to handle the swimmers. We drove up on Friday and dropped a vehicle at the West Fork Oak Creek trail head in late afternoon. Then headed up on the rim to find our car camp spot.

The bridge where FR 231 crosses West Fork has been washed out and being repaired but we parked at West Fork Tank ¾ mile from the bridge. Starting from there and then down into West Fork the first 3 miles is mostly dry and bouldering. Eventually we hit the first large pools and swimmer that turned me around last time. No problems this time as we crossed several pools in succession. However, there were some long dry stretches between the pools for the first 6 miles of the canyon.

About mile 7 we started seeing more regular flow and not too long after that we saw the first people of the day. Group of 6 backpackers and then a few other groups in the next mile. At this point it was the classic shots you see from West Fork with the water flowing across red rock slabs and towering red walls above. The next 3 miles or so in this section was definitely the highlight of the hike. We had pretty good light as it was getting late afternoon and good reflections of the walls and water. Took my time taking pics and just enjoyed the scenery.

Eventually we picked up the West Fork Trail and really the hike is somewhat over at this point compared to what we had just hiked through. Those last 3 or 4 miles went quickly and reached the parking lot by about 530. Great day in West Fork canyon and only thing left to do was drive back up on rim and retrieve the other car and car camp for the night.
