| no partners | | I somehow came across mention of Shaman's Gallery, the oldest prehistoric evidence of man in the Grand Canyon, and instantly knew we had to go see it. It took me hours (no joke) to figure out the location of the trailhead and how to get there. Park rangers were mute on the subject. One lady, while she wouldn't divulge any real information, suggested that it is a World Heritage Site. Hearing that only strengthened my resolve. (I've since scoured the WHS website and didn't find Shaman's Gallery on the list.)
The drive out was a real chore and I'd suggest that if it has rained or snowed recently, don't even try. The roads were deeply rutted and I could see a high clearance 4WD vehicle easily getting stuck in the mud. Further, the roads aren't marked, so you'll need a GPS route to follow just to get to the trailhead. Unfortunately, we no longer have the driving route or the hiking route on our computer.  I'm guessing it took us the better part of 2.5 hours just driving from Highway 389.
The first part of the hike is all downhill to get to the bottom of the canyon, but beware that there are some loose, very steep areas. Once you're down, though, it's easy sailing in a grassy wash. The panel is down-canyon, high up on the left wall. You'll have to climb up to a wide ledge to see it up close.
Note to give yourself plenty of time to drive to the trailhead and get back out during daylight to your wherever you're spending the night. Otherwise, camp at the trailhead. |
