Wow! pretty much describes this best of the best canyons.
Southern New Mexico offers no better cut. The towering granite cliffs and spires... the intimate rock jumbles with flowing falls...demanding scrambles... and again, those lichen illuminated towering cliffs!
Wow!
We took our time... enjoying the moments, enjoying the vistas. A bit of rockhounding yielded nice dendretic rock. The final right turn and climb up and out was even okay with the cooler temps (started in the 50"s... seven hours later not yet into 90's).
Last time in, exit was a bit extended... and rough. Today, Luster eliminated one of the descent options (he used it last time) so we checked out a third option... nice! There is a fourth crag to descend; I think it might be even better... Next time! Rains have filled the entire canyon with growth this year... made for a more demanding bit of route finding and made for obscured foot placement on the descent... no big deal.
Once on the exit ridge to the west we tried out a new option... sort of nice. Bottom line, you could safely route down and off the ridge from any of the adjoining ridges on your right once you pass the "lollipop" tree. Descending there might be a bit on the too steep side?
Next time in, we'll explore the canyon fork to the north (down where the canyon forks and you turn right to ascend). It looks to lead up and over into Big Ice Canyon?
Over 150 pics today... sort of in the range of an exploratory hike... but this cut is just sooooo... nice!
Guess I'll go edit those. |
