Light rain as I rode out to the trailhead in the predawn gloom. Wind was forecast, not wet!?

Met up with Mary under a clearing, blustery sky. Once again, enjoyed the access provided by the new trail over into Arrow canyon... just nice!

Soon we were moving up Arrow South. Passing Rebecca's Cut we noticed a far distant slot cut... never noticed it before, but had only been up Rebecca's Cut the one time. This had to be a south fork off that canyon? Odd, I had no memory of the cut splitting? For another day... along with yet another smaller north side canyon we passed as we climbed up the main canyon.

The goal for the day: climb high and check out the "V" Cut drainage. There appears to be a hidden cleft that might let us up the top cliffs? Mary was only hiking for a couple hours up canyon then turning back. She'd enjoy a solo descent. We split up above the crumbly rock scramble.

Once on my own my thoughts kept going back to that slot up Rebecca's. I diverted up a gully cut that aligned with the upper "V"... but really felt too small to be draining that upper cut. Sure enough, it ran steeply up a rock gorge, but cliffed out far below the upper cut. Not bad. I decided to move around the base of the cliffs around in to the Beca drainage. Scored interesting rock along the way...

... and following the base of the cliffs I dropped into an exceptional canyon! Looking up, the narrow slot section spotted from down in the main canyon. Down canyon: layer after layer of staircased falls... bedrock all.

Up might present a problem... chock block rock suspended in the slot. Today, I felt like a lighter hit, so I awkwardly scrambled down into the canyon bedrock. Once down, pure fun. There were a couple blocking falls, undercut but the first had a slot that allowed me down. The second... moved over 100' to the south and enjoyed a forked section of more bedrock. It continued easily down to the main canyon.

Once into the main Rebecca's Cut I could see why I had not spotted the fork. None of the upper was visible. The primary cut widened out with impressive bedrock that all appeared to feed down from the North Fork. The South Fork flowed into mostly hidden in the underbrush. Nicely, the main canyon flowed down from that point with layers and layers of bedrock... all the way down into Arrow South.

I had planned on a longer day... 38# pack with over two gallons of fluids. I drank 8#s of fluid, yet packed out 60#! Rocks. We had spotted a variety of nice specimens as we'd worked our way up in the morning. I opened my packs expandable section and hauled them out. Great bit of Exercise.

The forecast winds provided the final insult to the day... 40 mph gusts as headwinds!

Overall, a great day out!
