I have always enjoyed this section through Red River, Bobcat Pass, and down to the beautiful Eagle Nest area. I was headed for Springer, so when I got to Cimarron I headed south and east on NM 21. This was my first time on this road, and boy did it deliver the scenery! I hadn't realized how big of an area Philmont Scout Ranch covered...pretty impressive.
When I got to Springer I stopped to take a look at the Mills Mansion, since where I was headed to camp for the night, Mills Canyon on the Canadian River, had serious ties to Melvin Whitson Mills and his enterprises of the late 1800's. Quite the building indeed. Mr. Mills built it in 1877 and for many years life in his world was good, until a huge flood on the Canadian River in 1904 wiped out most of his business interests (including the massive orchard complex with more than 14,000 trees). This setback left him a broken man, and later when his demise was imminent, he asked the owner of his former home in Springer if he could be allowed to die there. His wish was granted and he passed on August 19, 1925.
From Springer I headed east on US 56 to Abbott then south on NM 39 to the almost ghost town of Mills, and the turnoff to go to Mills Canyon. I visited Mills Canyon once back in November 1998, and had sort of forgotten about it. But about a year ago, while thinking of something new to do in New Mexico, it came to mind and finally I was on my way. |
