| no partners | | I left Tucson Tuesday morning and treated myself to a stay at the Inn of the Governors in downtown Santa Fe. This got me 508 miles closer to the area I wanted to explore over the next several days. Wednesday morning I topped off the tank at Camel Rock and got more ice and then headed up to Taos for lunch at Orlando's (also stopped at two wineries along the way just because ). Then it was on to Questa and over to the monument. Since I had not been there before I did the loop drive, checking out all the viewpoints and campgrounds. Last stop was at the visitor center, which was closed as expected. The first campground Big Arsenic (where I hiked the next day) was full, and I didn't like what was available at the other ones, with the exception of the southern most one, La Junta. Three sites there and all unoccupied, so that was for me. Also, it is where the rim narrows down to a point with the deep gorge of Red River on one side and the Rio Grande gorge on the other. Very cool! At the viewpoint a short distance from the campsites you are treated to a great view down to the confluence of Red River & Rio Grande. |
