| no partners | | | Nice drive up to Onion Saddle with lots of water in the creeks and a fine summer look. By this time I had decided I would like to camp at Rustler Park because of the higher elevation and trail access. However, when I got there I found it was closed due to hazard trees. I thought they had that all cleared up in the 3 years it was closed following the big fire in 2011, but guess not. It was open in 2015 and 2016, but not this year. Supposedly it might reopen on September 1st, but don't be surprised if it doesn't. I passed about 4 cars on my way there, so other folks were either wanting to camp too or were out hiking on the Crest Trail. I took a short drive over to Barfoot Park, and sure enough there were a fair number of folks set up there instead. I am not overly fond of that location, so I continued my quest to find a camp spot by heading down the mountain toward the Portal area. |
