I recently committed myself to do a relatively difficult hike in the near future. This has forced me to get out there and do some hikes to prepare somewhat. The Wasson Loop has always been one of my favorites, but there has been a variation I have wanted to do for several years. Today would be the day. I actually had thought about doing it yesterday, but it was just to sunny and warm. As soon as I saw the dense cloud cover in the morning I knew it would be the right day.

Doing the hike counter-clockwise, there is a place after you come down Wasson on the Hugh Norris when you are going by Amole Peak, where you look right down the canyon and can see the Mile-Wide Mine and beyond to the Mam-A-Gah picnic area. I have wanted to depart the trail there and bushwhack to the mine. Once you get to the mine, there is a path along the old mine road that gets you back to the King Canyon Trail near the picnic area.

Since I was alone, I did the off trail part very carefully! It turned out to be a bit more difficult in the upper reaches than I expected, mostly because of the steep slope and constant vigilence to not slip/fall and to navigate between plentiful cactus. Once I finally got down off the slope and into the drainage things got a bit easier. Didn't run into any big obstacles; it was just slow going for safety.

When I got to the mine area I was on the other side of the wash from the old road, so I had to find a place to cross then climb up the steep tailings to reach it. I had been to the mine a couple other times over the years, so now my curiosity has been satisfied about what is above it. :D

The old road hasn't been used since at least the 1960's, so it is pretty overgrown and has been eroded by many heavy runoff events over time. But enough hikers go up to check out the mine from King Canyon that a path is evident. It looks like going to the mine by way of the wash might be better instead of following the old road, but either way works. This mine is not as well known because you can't see it from the trails (with the exception of high up on the Hugh Norris).
