| no partners | | Another Rainy/Overcast day in the PNW, but I wanted to head out again and hit a trail. Decided I would head up to Plaza Lake for a very short hike, but encountered quite a bit of snow on the drive in. Along the way I noticed the snow covered trail sign for Huxley Lake off FR4610 and pulled over to check it out. I was still 5 miles short of the Plaza Lake trailhead and the snow was starting to get deep. Since I was by myself I decided not to risk pushing my luck and settled for Huxley Lake.
I really didn't know what to expect, as I had never heard of Huxley Lake before. I didn't know how big the lake was or how long the trail was, but I figured that would just add to the excitement. The snow averaged about 6", but fortunately I didn't have any route finding issues. The trail contours along a hillside and then quickly looses elevation as it drops towards the lake. By the time I hit 3000' the snow was completely gone. The lake itself is not very interesting, it looks pretty shallow and shoreline access is very limited. Once I got home I looked at maps and it looks like FR4611 skirts along the south shore of the lake and would make a much easier access point if I ever wanted to head back (which I don't). |
