| no partners | | Continuing my quest to visit more mid-elevation lakes as they begin to get blanketed with snow. The drive to this trailhead is longer than it used to be due to an apparent road closure, so the last 20 miles are along a pothole covered forest road. Pretty smooth sailing up until the last 3 or 4 miles when it started to get snowy, but nothing the FJ couldn't handle.
Just a couple of inches of snow on the ground at the trailhead, but it was snowing and the snow only got deeper as I climbed. The lake was gorgeous, it was probably about 60-70% covered in snow and ice already, I lingered for a bit and enjoyed the view, then headed up to South Fork Mountain.
The "un-maintained" trail was easy to follow, even when completely covered by snow. It probably averaged about 6" deep for most of the hike above the lake, but for the last 100' or so along the ridge I was walking through drifts that were just about knee deep. Super windy at the top, I didn't linger long as the view was socked in and getting wind-blasted by shards of ice wasn't really pleasant.
Weather actually got better as I descended and I could see a couple patches of blue sky, it even stopped raining/snowing. Beautiful sunset on the drive back. |
