It was started in 1934 and completed 1937 by the Penrose family who also started the zoo and Broadmoor. Couldn’t get a good reason why they dedicated it to Will Rogers except they got a little negativity about naming it Penrose and apparently after starting to build it Will Rogers tragically died in a plane crash in Alaska. They were acquainted, but there are no known pictures of Spencer’s Penrose and Will Rogers together. He and his wife along with two others are interred below the chapel in the shrine. There are numerous photographs of Will Rogers in all morning of the rooms. Including last photo taken of him and the pilot before they crashed as well as photos of the wreckage. Although the zoo is back to normal after last weeks hail storm it was closed for 4 days for cleanup. 14 people were injured and 5 animals killed by or died of injuries sustained from hail. There are still a lot of hail damaged vehicles that have not been removed from the parking lots and along the side of the road going up to the shrine. Roof damage is apparent on all the buildings and numerous skylights are boarded up as well. The whole area around the zoo had baseball sized hail. Our friend that works at the zoo had her car totaled and their roof of their house has to be replaced. |
