Starting at the King Canyon Parking, we walked up the wash. Look for ancient petrographs made by the Hohokam Indians between 900 and 1300 A.D. on the rock walls and holes in the rocks on the ground where they ground corn. Going on the Kings Canyon Trail would be easier than the wash or you can walk down the wash on your return. Spring flowers in March were spectacular as were the views, though no cacti bloom yet. Coulter's Lupine and Mexican Poppies dominate. An interesting member of the Mustard Family shows up right away, Twist Flower. Further up, look for two spectacular Penstemon: purple Parry's Penstemon and brilliant red Hackberry Beardtongue. At the junction of the Sweetwater Trail, turn left to stay on the King Canyon Trail, which climbs up steeply via switch-backs. Also look for bright orange-reddish Globemallows, often hanging off the edge into the views. When Kings Canyon Trail ends at the Hugh Norris Trail, turn right for the last push to the top of Wasson Peak, a great place for lunch, with an Antelope Rock Squirrel to entertain you as well as the 360 degree views. You can see Tucson with Mount Lemmon behind and Kitt Peak Observatory on the other side. Return via Hugh Norris Trail past King Canyon Trailhead to the Sendero Esperanza Trail. Turn left on the Sendero Esperanza Trail to continue downhill. You will pass by some fenced-off mine holes and an abandoned building. You can turn right on either the Gould Mine Trail or the King Canyon Trail back to the parking.
