After waking up Saturday, we took a ~8 mile off-trail hike from the campground to see nearby Indian Lake and Ducksnest Lake in a big loop. Although both lakes were dry, it was a nice hike. Stormy skies above the volcanic prairie with mountains around made for a beautiful and awesome backdrop. We were also lucky enough to see a herd of Antelope from a distance near Ducksnest Lake. Saturday evening was colder and quite a bit windier, but comfortable with a fire.
Sunday morning gave us a really nice surprise, with a layer of snow all around us. Waking up to the snow among the junipers next to the lake was great. After a muddy packing-up, we hit the road and drove back to Phoenix through Sedona. The rain and mist in the red rocks was a highlight of the drive home. |
