Supposedly the cave got it's name for the engraved profile of a cowboy (replete with 10-gallon hat and cigarette). We talked with a rancher before dropping into the canyon and he said he and his buddies always called it the "Indian Cave". Sadly, modern-day graffiti is so overwhelming that it's likely many of the ancient petroglyphs are indiscernible. Still, there are some good big horn sheep, turkey tracks, and a bison to be seen. There's also an ingeniously-constructed seeping-water-capture device that's piped from one of the caves out to a watering trough. It's still working to this day. |
